Overview

Prone positioning is a critical intervention in managing patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and other severe respiratory conditions. When performed safely and effectively, proning can improve oxygenation, ventilation-perfusion matching, and patient outcomes.

This evidence-informed course offers physiotherapists and cardiorespiratory clinicians practical guidance on how to safely implement prone positioning, including indications, contraindications, patient selection, and procedure considerations. Learners also benefit from visual demonstrations and real-world examples from multiple facilities, making the content immediately applicable to clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the Clinical Rationale for Proning
Explain the physiological benefits and evidence supporting prone positioning in patients with ARDS and severe respiratory compromise.

  2. Identify Indications and Contraindications
Recognize when proning is appropriate, including patient selection criteria and situations where it should be avoided.

  3. Perform Safe Proning Procedures
Demonstrate step-by-step procedures for proning patients, including positioning techniques, team coordination, and safety considerations.

  4. Integrate Visual and Real-World Examples
Apply lessons from videos and facility examples to enhance clinical decision-making and practical skills.
